A LIFE BUILT THROUGH PRESSURE, PURPOSE AND DEFIANCE
Dave Bolton is a keynote speaker, former military serviceman, former Detective Sergeant, world kickboxing champion, charity founder and one of the rarest long term survivors of terminal brain cancer in the world.
THIS IS NOT A STORY FROM THE SIDELINES
Dave has not studied pressure from a distance. He has lived it in rooms, arenas and moments where the outcome mattered.
His message comes from experience, not theory. From the split second decisions of frontline service and covert policing to the long, brutal process of rebuilding after injury and illness, Dave’s story carries the weight of someone who knows what it means to keep going when everything changes.
THE CHAPTERS THAT BUILT DEFIANCE
Before the keynote, before the stage and before the word Defiance became a message, there was a life shaped by moments that tested everything.
Each chapter below helped build the mindset, standards and purpose Dave now shares with leaders, teams and audiences across the world.
These are the chapters that built Defiance.
IRAQ/KUWAIT
Joined the military at 18 and served in RAF Air Operations in Iraq as part of Operation Southern Watch.
Attached to the US Marines, Dave learned early what it meant to operate in environments where the pressure was real.
Awarded the GSM II medal for service in a warzone.
COVERT OPERATIONS
As a Detective Sergeant, Dave led covert policing and intelligence operations across Huyton and Liverpool, working on high profile investigations with national agencies including the National Crime Agency.
It was a world where pressure was real, decisions mattered and standards could not drop.
LIFE THREATENING INJURY
Crushed by a 23 ton articulated lorry in a near fatal motorcycle accident, Dave was 30 seconds from death, placed in a coma and faced the possibility of losing his leg.
Told he may never walk unaided again, he refused to let that become the end of his story.
WORLD CHAMPION
After rebuilding from injuries that nearly ended his life, Dave became World Light Heavyweight Kickboxing Champion in Pisa, Italy.
Nine fights in four days tested his discipline, pain threshold and refusal to quit.
THE SEIZURE
After a stressful day at work, Dave suffered a 15 minute nocturnal seizure that changed his life overnight.
Scans revealed a tennis ball sized tumour, in his brain pulling him from a life built around pressure into a completely different fight.
ASTROCYTOMA II
Dave was diagnosed with a diffuse grade 2 Astrocytoma and underwent brain surgery to remove the tumour.
Life became a cycle of recovery, scans, uncertainty and learning to live with what could not be controlled.
GBM IV
One year after his first brain tumour, Dave was diagnosed with Glioblastoma Multiforme Grade 4 IDH Wildtype and given just three months to live.
Radiotherapy, chemotherapy, seizures, severe weight loss and psychological breakdown pushed him to the edge.
At his lowest, Dave wanted to stop. Instead, he found a way to keep going.
AHEAD OF THE GAME
Dave founded Ahead Of The Game Foundation to turn pain into purpose and support people facing the impact of cancer.
The charity now provides fully funded physical, mental and emotional support to people diagnosed with cancer and their families.
MOUNT KILIMANJARO
In October 2024, Dave summited Mount Kilimanjaro, reaching Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres above sea level with terminal brain cancer.
The climb marked 10 years since his terminal diagnosis and 20 years since the accident that nearly ended his life.
A summit built on defiance, purpose and the belief that a prognosis is not a life sentence.
